Definition:
The pattern of Rural settlement has been defined as the relationship between a house or building to another
- A Rural settlement pattern is a function of Relief, Climate, Water supply, and Socio economic factor
- It is broadly classified under four patterns
- Linear settlement
- Rectangular settlement
- Circular settlement
- Star like pattern settlement etc.,
1.Linear settlement:
In a linear settlement houses are arranged along the either side of a road, Railway line, River or Canal, The edge of a valley etc.,
2.Rectangular Settlement:
The Rectangular settlements are almost straight meeting each other at right angles. Such a settlement is found in plain areas or intermontane plane.
[ Montane means inhabiting mountainous country ]
Example:
- Suklach
3.Circular settlement:
In this settlement houses built around central area. Such settlements develop around lakes.
4.Star like settlements:
The star like pattern of settlement develops on the sides and places where several roads converge and houses spread out along the sides of roads in all directions.
[ Converge means tend to meet at a point (i.e.) Intersect ]
Example:
- The Indo-Ganga plains of Punjab and Haryana
